Back to School with Kids Love Musicals!
TMTP’s First VIRTUAL Member Event
September 15, 2020 | 12 PM & 7 PM on Zoom
“I have a place where dreams are born, and time is never planned.”
As kids return to schools in various ways this fall, TMTP thought adults could use a trip back to childhood as well.
Join Director of Active Learning Jodi Maile Kirk and TMTP Teaching Artists Caitlin Miller and Will Sanborn in a special Kids Love Musicals! session designed just for our Members. We’ll explore the themes of Peter Pan by exclaiming “I Won’t Grow Up,” joining Captain Hook’s gang of pirates and sharing all the things that make us crow!
Space is limited for these intimate virtual gatherings so please register for ONE of the sessions today. If you plan to attend as a couple or household, only ONE ticket needs to be reserved (one ticket per screen).
Registered attendees will receive a Zoom link via email ONE HOUR prior to the event.

THE MUSIC OF SHUFFLE ALONG
On February 3, TMTP Members packed Nighttown a Bill Rudman and Karamu House President and CEO Tony Sias led an interactive discussion about the differences between early 20th-century ragtime and more contemporary jazz. Bringing their insights to life were pianists Joe Hunter and George Foley, both of whom were featured in that week’s TMTP-Karamu partnership concert, “The Impact of Shuffle Along,” the classic 1921 musical.
10th Annual TV Musical Screening: Peter Pan
On October 10, more than 75 TMTP Members packed a room at John Carroll University’s Dolan Science Center to see a special screening of the 1956 TV musical Peter Pan starring Mary Martin. They had a ball.
Bill Rudman and JCU’s Bob Noll shared background on this beloved musical directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins. After the screening, TMTP Member Jay Rockman, who saw the original on Broadway as a kid, said, “It was magical to watch her again. You can see how she could charm anyone.
And Heather Meeker and TMTP Teaching Artist Trinidad Snideroffered a demonstration of the Kids Love Musicals! residency exploring Peter Pan; our school program has been giving children a chance to sing, act, move and crow to the songs from the show since 2007. Only this time it was TMTP’s adult Members who were doing the crowing — led by Jay! He remembers Mary Martin teaching the kids in the Broadway audience how to raise their voices. “I’m an expert,” he laughed, “because Mary taught me to crow over 60 years ago. I learned from the best!”
So this annual Member event combined a rare video document of a great Broadway musical with a taste of how TMTP is introducing area children to classic musical theater. Said Member Lin Bartel, “I am so excited about what TMTP does to inspire our students — they are the future audience for this art form.”
