Film Introductions

by Bill Rudman

This is a stylish, very un-Disney animated musical created for both children and adults. Judy Garland is the voice of Mewsette, a French country cat who runs off to Paris during the Gay 90s seeking excitement – but finds danger when she falls into the claws of Meowrice, a villainous seducer of lovely young kitties. Robert Goulet, fresh from Broadway’s Camelot, is Jaune Tom, Mewsette’s devoted country-bumpkin beau.

The rarely seen film has become a cult classic. Garland, then 40, is in fine fettle on the vocals (especially in the songs “Paris Is a Lonely Town” and “Little Drops of Rain”) and acts the part wonderfully well. (We know she had a grand time working on it.)

The screenplay was written by Dorothy and Chuck Jones; he had taken animation down an adventurous new road at Warner Bros., helping bring to life Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, and it was Jones who created Elmer Fudd, Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner. Also Gay Purr-ee reunited Garland with the great songwriters Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, who had gifted her with “Over the Rainbow” and the rest of the Oz songs nearly 25 years earlier.
