Film Introductions
by Bill Rudman
With films like Rosemary’s Baby, The Boston Strangler and Planet of the Apes filling American screens in 1968, what was a family to do?
Antidote: Go see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, starring Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes, based on stories by Ian Fleming.
James Bond’s Ian Fleming?! Yep. He wrote this saga of a flying car for his children.
The musical, which reunited a number of the “creatives” from the Mary Poppins gang (including Dick, who is now 100), was less than a complete success. I’m sure our discussion group won’t hesitate to throw some darts. So did I in my video intro contained herein. But co-host Ashley Bernett has championed Chitty for years, and that’s reason enough to give it some time and attention.
So climb in the back seat—Dick is driving—of “our fine four-fendered friend.”
